i just saw your post on sd. i have it too, i'm natural, and it's been hard as hell on my hair because i can't keep it moisturized without scalp flare ups. stay away from leave-in detanglers, lotions, creams, oils, and DEFINITELY hair grease. greasing your scalp for hair growth is a LIE. i started using raw shea butter (without anything added) on my hair and my scalp stayed CLEAN. i even use it on dry spots around my edges and it doesn't turn into a flaky, greasy mess. try it!
thank you for the advice, a while after that i now believe it’s contact dermatitis, as the symptoms were exactly what i was experiencing, i.e itching and flaking exactly 2-3 days after using a fragranced product. and sure enough i stopped using fragranced shampoo, conditions, leave ins, deep conditioners, and even essential oils and it stopped.
lately though i’ve been having a case where the glycerine i use and even the aloe vera are making my scalp itch, although i’m not 100% sure. it simply means i have to be sure where i’m getting all my products from, for example i got 100% vitamin e oil from ebay that said wheat germ oil on the label, after going fragrance free and itch free for about 10 days i put the oil in and my scalp was on fire, which meant they must have mixed a load of things in there.
i can’t use butters either my hair is very fine and low porosity so it would cause too much product build up (in fact castor oil is killing it for me, i have to dilute it). i also don’t grease my scalp either, i never did it before i went natural and when i did… i think i did it for about 5 days and gave up lol!
if its of any help you can also try fragrance free hair products? it can relief the symptoms some, just in case fragrance aggravates your scalp too, or it could even be contact dermatitis(i suspect it is since the shea butter with no essential oils is helping you) that you have so you can get rid of it for good as long as you stay away from dodgy hair products :) (and synthetic hair…as right now, my crochet braids are making my scalp itchy due to the alkaline layer on most synthetic extensions)
positive thing about this is that my product junkeism ways are no more, can’t be too weary off all those products out there! (in fact i just use water as my moisturiser and leave in lol!)
